Nico (Apr. 15)
I was listening to that Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood opening, "Hologram" by Nico Touches the Walls, and was inspired to make something with a guitar tone like that. Personally, I don't think "Nico" really resembles that opening very much, but it's definitely anime inspired at the very least lol.
The way this song came about was really odd though. I came up with all the rhythm guitar parts, synths, and drums, then I later wrote a melody on top. I wrote the melody late at night humming and playing on the keyboard, since it was late at night and I didn't wanna wake up everybody with my singing haha. This caused some issues though, because I later realized it was really high and difficult to sing.
And since it sounded bad when I recorded vocals on it, I decided to just play the melody on guitar. But I ended up scrapping that because it didn't sound good either. I went back and forth between having the melody on guitar and vocals for months before kinda soft-scrapping it.
Months after I wrote the song, I was on call with Chris and Matt, talking about how it bummed me out that this song might never get finished. I showed it to them and Matt offered to do vocals on it! We realized though that it still a little too high (because of that dumb key change in the last chorus), so I tuned it down two semitones and rerecorded the instrumental.
I wrote the majority of the lyrics, but Matt wrote his own melody and lyrics for the bridge and helped me iron out the lyrics during the key change.
I'm really happy with how "Nico" turned out and eternally grateful to Matt for saving this song, and arguably the album as a whole! Thanks Matt!
